July efug: Grant Skinner et al http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2008/07/july_efug_grant.html After a short break, we're up for some summertime fuggin'.

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008
The Billiard Club on Whyte (map and address in the left-hand sidebar)
7:00pm

Chief Architect & CEO of gskinner.com, Grant Skinner is going to shed some light on his design process and tools.

------------------------

Designing With Flash?

While much better known for laying down code than for laying out websites, I still love dabbling in interface design when I have an excuse. Lately, I've found myself doing almost all of my conceptual design in the Flash IDE, instead of Photoshop. This has very obvious workflow advantages, but I would also make the contentious argument that Flash is now a *better* tool for designing certain types of sites. I've even used Flash to design HTML sites, which I then rebuild in part with Photoshop - this is a complete reversal of my workflow from two years ago.

In this informal session, I will talk about the new features in Flash that have made it such a useful design tool, my design process, and some of the things I think make it a better tool for certain projects than Photoshop.

Designers may find this talk useful for their own process. Developers might find it useful to convince the designers in their lives to work in Flash - wouldn't that make the designer developer workflow so much more peaceful?

------------------------

After Grant's session, we will be having an informal open-podium portion of the evening. This is an opportunity for you to share with the local community a cool project you've been working on, a sweet Flash feature/tip you'd like to share or simply show a stellar use of Flash you've experienced recently. Contributions are limited to 5 minutes max, and will earn you a ballot of some of our larger prizes of the evening.

Don't forget that the Billiard club offers us happy-hour drink prices and five-dollar appetizers all night long — hope to see you there!

FitC 2008 efug Smackdown http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2008/03/fitc_2008_efug.html

Monday, April 14th, 7:00pm
The Billiard Club on Whyte Ave
10505 82 Avenue NW
Second Floor of the Historic Post Office Building

As the 2008 Flash in the Can (FitC) Festival draws near, we've put together an evening you don't want to miss! Mark it down.

Flash superstar Grant Skinner has agreed to present his 2008 FitC session that he will be sharing in Toronto. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to enjoy a world-class session, free of charge, amidst five dollar appies and happy-hour drink prices. As always, we'll be swaggin' it up, and yes — even giving away a full commercial version on Adobe Creative Suite 3!

If you are able to make it out to Toronto, FitC has generated a discount code for all efug members to receive 10% off! Your discount code is: EFUG331

Here is the skinny on Grant's sess:

----------------------------------------

My Favourite Things

When the client bites,
When the run-time error stings,
When Flash makes me mad,
I simply revisit my favourite things,
And then I don't feel, so bad.

A fun trip through some of the code, concepts, and approaches that have particularly intrigued or interested Grant while doing visual experimentation in ActionScript. This session has a particular focus on visualizing important concepts in coding, and using unexpected approaches to tackle tough problems in interesting ways. No "girls in white dresses and blue satin sashes", but there will be virtual "snow-flakes that stay on my nose and eye-lashes".

----------------------------------------

More about FitC:

Break IT! Break your tools. Break your patterns. Break the norm. Break the standards at FITC Toronto: The Design + Technology Festival. Flex 3 & AIR 1.0 Launch Event: TONIGHT (February 25, 2008) http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2008/02/flex_3_air_10_l.html As you may have heard, Adobe has announced the release of Adobe Flex 3 and Adobe AIR 1.0. Now that the cat is out of the bag, this will be the focus of our efug gathering tonight! Adobe is sponsoring this meeting with food, giveaways and a raffle copy of Adobe Flex Professional.

Flex 3 is a feature-packed release, adding new UI components like the advanced datagrid and improved CSS capabilities; powerful tooling additions like refactoring; and extensive testing tools including memory and performance profiling, plus the addition of the automated testing framework to Flex Builder.

Adobe AIR is game-changing in so many ways, delivering rich applications on the desktop, enabling access to the local file system, system tray, notifications and much more. Now you can write RIAs on the desktop using the same skills that you've been already using to create great web apps including both Flex and AJAX.

Don't miss out on this opportunity to see and hear about this highly anticipated release of Flex 3 and AIR at this meeting. If you have been working in Flex or AIR, feel free to bring down your applications for a quick demo of what you have been developing.

Additionally, Adobe's Ted Patrick has put together a stellar promo for the release of Flex 3 & AIR, it is called "30onair". The project involves creating 30 second videos answering one of the following questions: Why Flash Player? Why AIR? Why Flash? Why Flex? Why ColdFusion? Why AJAX? Why JavaScript? Why ActionScript?

Rules:
1. 30 seconds of video (estimate)
2. Answer one of the questions above
3. Be creative.

You can talk about your favorite features, why you use these technologies, or just a guitar tribute to Adobe AIR! The best ones will be showcased on Adobe.com, community blogs, and http://www.30onair.com. For instance, check out our own local celebrity Randy Troppmann on the 30onair.com front page, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9iopziDEug

Tonight I'll have a camera set up for you to shoot your own ~30 second clip, it would be great for us to send some casual, fun feedback to Adobe. Feel free to bring ideas and props!

Hope to see you there tonight!

Flex 3 / AIR Pre-Release Follow-Up http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2008/02/flex_3_air_foll.html I just wanted to take a moment to thank those of you who attended our Flex 3 and AIR pre-release gathering last week — a head-count revealed there were about 80 in attendance. It is your participation that strengthens our community and makes it really worthwhile for the organizers of these events.

A big 'thank-you' goes out to Duane Nickull of Adobe for rocking into Edmonton in sub-zero temperatures to give his presentation. Congratulations to our iPod, Adobe Creative Suite and FlexBuilder 3 winners too!

I am just working out the details for our February gathering, which should be an equally epic event. Just a reminder that you can sign up for the newsletter and community forum on the left, or join our facebook group.

Using a Custom CellRenderer with an AS3 List Component
Randy Troppman
http://www.runningmap.com/

The new List user interface component in Flash CS3 is “the grenade.” That is to say, it is not quite “the bomb” but is an everyday workhorse version of “the bomb”.

Sometimes though, you just need change it up a little. Like perhaps grenades with yellow flowers painted on them? In this session Randy will demonstrate how he used a custom cellRenderer (and FileReference) to build a List based upload tool (AS3) and talk about the 'gotchya' he encountered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taking Control Away From the Player
Chris Caldwell
http://www.caldwellcreative.com/

From the perspective of a designer new to AS3, Chris will take a look at creating persistent sound using various MP3 player controls in a changing html framework.

This may be your last chance to enter your name for the December Adobe CS3 Suite giveaway! Bring your friends and colleagues — hope to see you there!

3D Flash Jedi: John Grden: Follow-Up http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2007/10/3d_flash_jedi_j_1.html I just wanted to take a moment to thank John for a mind-blowing session on Monday night. We really appreciate the time he took to show us the basics of using PaperVision 3D, including getting started with the PaperVision components in Flash CS3, using PaperVision in FlexBuilder, using and skinning Collada models created in 3D Studio Max, the basics of creating a true 3D gaming environment, and a sneak peek at some next-gen materials PaperVision will soon be able to offer!

There was a great turn-out from the local community, which is an accurate reflection of the welcoming, positive energy John takes everywhere he goes. Many thanks John! Truly world-class.

To learn more out PaperVision 3d and the future of 3D in Flash, check out John's blog, and the PV wiki.

3D Flash Jedi: John Grden http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2007/10/3d_flash_jedi_j.html Anyone who attended last month's gathering will surely agree how rad Warf's remote presentation was; so we've lined up another remote media Rockstar for October. It's gonna be awesome — and by awesome, I mean totally sweet.

This Monday, October 15th, 7:00 pm (MDT), at the Billiard Club on Whyte (map and address on the left), John Grden will be walking us through the smoldering hot technology that everyone is talking about…

Nobody lays it down better than John:

Papervision3D: Everybody Wants to Touch You!

Yeah, yeah, it's nice being able to make a cube in 3D space and all, but where's the pizazz?! It's not good enough that PV3D gives you real-time 3D and collada support - you gotta touch the stuff now?! Freakin' whiners. Fine.

We'll make interactive materials all night and throw down some casual gaming samples with an x-wing demo — 'cause, I don't do stuff without x-wing demos ;)

- John Grden

We're really lucky to have John volunteer for us in between his Adobe Max and Flash on the Beach sessions, so take advantage. If you're new to Papervision, check out the wiki.

Join us for happy-hour drink prices, five-buck appies n' swag in a super-casual environment where anyone is welcome. Bring your friends and colleagues — hope to see you there!

A Southerly Breeze: Follow-Up http://www.gskinner.com/efug/archives/2007/09/a_southerly_bre.html I just wanted to thank Michael Warf again for a fantastic remote presentation from his beautiful new home in Southern Alberta.

In one of the best presos we've enjoyed over the years, Michael walked us through his creative and technical process in creating a unique, 'worldly' experience where users navigate through a blend of photography, abstract pseudo-3D, and beautiful renderings of the University of Lethbridge Campus.

We wish Michael all the best in his new adventure and look forward to continuing to 'Connect' with him over the information superhighway.
