July Gathering Recap

The July gathering was the first meeting after a long hiatus, and it looks like we're off to a great new start! Over 30 Edmonton Flash developers were treated to two great sessions.

Thank you to Skye Bowes and Jordan Dubuc of XGen Studios for their talk on developing real-time multiplayer games in Flash. We hope to have their slides and source code available soon.

Also, a big thank you to Perry Shulack of Critical Fusion for his session exploring a recent project of his for the WCB. You can view his slides here.

The new format seemed to work well, with a lot of networking and beer drinking (both good things!), so we'll be sticking with it in the future. That means two 15-45 minute sessions (or a two part one hour session) with a 30-45 minute social intermission. I'm hoping this encourages networking and community building, and makes it much easier for people to prepare short sessions on their work or specific elements of Flash (and related technology).

If you're interested in presenting a 15-60 minute talk at EFUG in the next few months, I'd love to hear from you. I'd also be happy to provide some editorial support for your session.

The next gathering will be on the third Monday of August (August 21) at 7pm. I'll post / send out more information when we get closer to the date.

Next Meeting: July 17

The next Edmonton Flash User Group gathering will be held on Monday July 17 at 7pm. As usual it will be held at Guru Digital Arts College (address and map available to the left ), and will feature refreshments, networking, discussions, shwag, and a couple of great talks from some local Flash talent.

Our first talk for the night will be presented by Skye Boyes and Jordan Dubuc of XGen Studios Inc.

"Introduction to Real-Time Multiplayer Games (In Flash!)"
Skye Boyes and Jordan Dubuc discuss developing real-time multiplayer games in Flash®. Overall strategy, concepts, and basic ActionScript will be explored. An example game will be dissected and the source code made available.

This will be followed by some open networking and discussion time, then another great presentation by Perry Shulak of Critical Fusion, inc.

"Getting a grip on Actionscript when you need to get the job done."
Perry Shulak operating as Critical Fusion Inc. will journey through one of his currently completed projects, an online learning presentation for the WCB, that was handled from concept, script, creative to programming. This was a do it all yourself project, where he will outline his experience with Actionscipt, and all the revelations he has unveiled in priming his brain to conquer the programming language. He will also give his take on onEnterFrame, and his other personal explorations of movement using code.

This should be a great gathering. I hope to see you there!
