Flex 3 / AIR Pre-Release Follow-Up

I just wanted to take a moment to thank those of you who attended our Flex 3 and AIR pre-release gathering last week — a head-count revealed there were about 80 in attendance. It is your participation that strengthens our community and makes it really worthwhile for the organizers of these events.

A big 'thank-you' goes out to Duane Nickull of Adobe for rocking into Edmonton in sub-zero temperatures to give his presentation. Congratulations to our iPod, Adobe Creative Suite and FlexBuilder 3 winners too!

I am just working out the details for our February gathering, which should be an equally epic event. Just a reminder that you can sign up for the newsletter and community forum on the left, or join our facebook group.

Thanks for your participation!

Flex Fug Followup

Thanks to everyone that showed up to last night's special efug gathering. We had a pretty good turn out, considering we were competing with the Oilers' game.

Super thanks to Ted Patrick from Adobe, who presented on Flex and lead us through an overview and cool examples of how easy it is to create rich applications in Flex Builder. As promised, Ted was nice enough to provide us his source files from the demo, which can be downloaded here.

Here's to a super new years! Keep on flashing :)

December 20th Meeting recap

Last night's meeting went pretty well. We had a modest turn out, which was good considering there was no reminder email sent out last week. It's good to see how committed our members are :)

As usual there was beer and some good flash chatting. Michael Warf gave off a great talk about sIFR, a framework that allows developers to replace text styles at run-time with much nicer flash alternatives. This was followed by some social time, and then Lanny McNie's AS2-AS3 Migration talk that gave everyone an idea of what converting Flash 8 projects to Actionscript 3 would be like, and provided an overview of some of the key changes most developers will have to deal with. As promised, the source files for the talk can be downloaded here.

The end of the night was capped off with a draw for a copy of gskinner.com's Combo Panel Pack, which includes the popular gProject panel, along with the brand new Panel Pack 1 panel set. The winner was Leejay Dunphy. Please email lanny (at) gskinner (dot) com if you do not receive your prize.

Thanks to everyone who showed up. Just a reminder that there is no EFUG for December, so we will see you all on the 15th of January for some more flash goodness!

Recap of Flash 10th Birthday Party

Our August meeting was a blast! To celebrate Flash's 10th birthday we had a party with food, drink, cupcakes, prizes and a whole lot of fun. Rather than having formal talks, we opened up the floor, and let attendees share their old work, inspirational sites, or favourite projects. Everyone who presented got entered in a raffle for a full copy of Studio 8, and some consolation prizes (pens, anyone?). We also had a short quiz on the history of Flash that gave everyone a chance to win some shwag.

A good time was had by all (I hope), with some terrific food, great presentations, and lots of beer. I was having too much fun chatting to take many pictures, but here's a few for those who didn't make it:

Bobi Skinner tending the foodstuffs.

Watching the presentations.

Perry Shulak talking about one of his projects.

Our next meeting will be on September 18, and will feature talks by Erik Johnson and Randy Troppman. We'll send out more info in the next few days.

July Gathering Recap

The July gathering was the first meeting after a long hiatus, and it looks like we're off to a great new start! Over 30 Edmonton Flash developers were treated to two great sessions.

Thank you to Skye Bowes and Jordan Dubuc of XGen Studios for their talk on developing real-time multiplayer games in Flash. We hope to have their slides and source code available soon.

Also, a big thank you to Perry Shulack of Critical Fusion for his session exploring a recent project of his for the WCB. You can view his slides here.

The new format seemed to work well, with a lot of networking and beer drinking (both good things!), so we'll be sticking with it in the future. That means two 15-45 minute sessions (or a two part one hour session) with a 30-45 minute social intermission. I'm hoping this encourages networking and community building, and makes it much easier for people to prepare short sessions on their work or specific elements of Flash (and related technology).

If you're interested in presenting a 15-60 minute talk at EFUG in the next few months, I'd love to hear from you. I'd also be happy to provide some editorial support for your session.

The next gathering will be on the third Monday of August (August 21) at 7pm. I'll post / send out more information when we get closer to the date.

June 20 Gathering Recap

A big thank you to everyone who attended the June gathering. It was nice to see a lot of new faces. As always, we had some great swag and a good presentation (I hope - I presented it). After the gathering, a bunch of us headed to Sherlock's for some post-nerdery beer. Michael Warf took some pictures, which can be seen at:

The notes / code for the session will be available after July 10 from my Session Notes page.

April 18 Recap

The April 18 gathering went really well, with a turn out of 20-25 people. Lucas Swick gave a great talk about some of the tools he has been building at Montage Studios. We then had a discussion about the proposed Adobe acquisition of Macromedia.

If you attended, we'd really appreciate if you would post any feedback you have on the gathering in the forums, or to efug@gskinner.com.

I'll post back here when the session notes are available.
